Will coffee brands that were banned in Brazil due to excess impurities be sold for world in 2025?

In 2024, more than ten brands of coffee were banned in Brazil after failing the rigorous inspections carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).

The reason for these bans was the non-compliance with quality standards, including the excess of impurities and foreign matter, compromising the safety and health of consumers. The companies responsible for the products cannot sell them until all legal requirements are met and confirmed by the competent authorities.

What led to the ban on some coffee brands?

The most common causes for coffee bans include the presence of impurities beyond the permissible limit, which is 1%. Impurities can be composed of foreign matter, such as grains of other plant species, sand, stones or even feces. In addition, substances such as dyes, sugar and coffee grounds are also subject to disapproval, as they compromise the quality of the product.

Another factor that leads to the declassification of coffee is the presence of contaminants, such as mycotoxins and toxic agents, which can pose serious health risks. The deterioration of the product, resulting from poor conservation, is also a reason for the ban. Mold, insects and unwanted odors resulting from poor coffee conservation are also considered serious infractions. 

The tests include, in addition to checking for impurities, the analysis of other factors, such as the presence of mycotoxins, a type of biological contamination that can be highly toxic, and the verification of coffee storage conditions. When a batch of coffee is rejected, the brand involved has to correct the problems pointed out and submit new batches to tests to be authorized to market its products again.
